Chapter 10

Two days later, we were eating cannelloni in relative silence apart from a few loose ends to tie up with work. Only a few days before everything got tabled during the honeymoon.

“Wayne’s gonna do the Umzu meeting,” Jonathan announced.

I cinched my mouth to one side, skeptical. “They’re not gonna like that.”

“I talked him up, he’ll be fine,” he insisted, resolute. Sounded like a dumpster fire of a first meeting but what did I know? He was the boss, after all.

There was nothing more said about the party or what happened during it. This was great because it gave me an excuse to keep my head down, look away when he looked at me, and generally make my standoffishness look like resentment wrapped in maturity and professionalism, rather than what it was which was flowering yet stifled lust.

“Training wheels finally coming off, eh?” I said in reference to Wayne.

“Looks that way.”

“I told you. Just had to stop pushing.”

Our clanging silverware was as loud as clock bells in the exaggerated silence. At least that’s how it felt in my head.

“Did you get the marriage license thing figured out?” he suddenly asked.

“Yes. They sent it here instead of the office.”

Silence. Then he nervously remembered something else.

“Please tell me your passport came in.”

“My what??” I answered comically with a dramatic voice.

He grinned into his food as he widened his eyes. At least he knew I wasn’t angry.

Maybe it was irresponsible, but I simply didn’t want to ask any more questions or address any more problems not related to my job. Not until I’d had at least one day in paradise with him, no matter what we did.

All I needed him to do was to keep being my weird, slightly unreasonable boss for the next two weeks, and none of the other guy. So far, so good.

“I don’t want you to bring your laptop,” he said.

Bingo.

“Fine,” I said.

I was definitely bringing my laptop.

If there wasn’t going to be any sex, let me at least get ahead of schedule by the time we get back.

Just as I thought, two weeks of absence did indeed make the heart grow less fond. With the sale of one company salvaged, the NYC contract for Vance starting, and the loss of one pasta Tuesday, he was as obnoxious as ever. Though he told me he’d tried not to be for the sake of my nerves. “Amalfi coast can’t come soon enough,” said one text. I didn’t answer back.

It was great to have the reminder that Jonathan was a big baby that I could never have a balanced relationship with. But that I would marry, I guess? And hopefully, bang.

The night before the wedding I was feeling pumped. My hair was getting done, my period was officially over, and I was ready to keep the good luck momentum going for the next three weeks. My first time in Italy.
